Transforming legal services with generative AI at a global FMCG leader

The challenge

Our customer is a global market leader in the FMCG industry reconfiguring its legal service delivery to include hubs of excellence in three time zones around the world. A major concern for the customer was how to upscale its new joiners’ skill level in a short time after their recruitment. Along with the recruitment of these resources came the challenge of dealing with multiple languages across multiple jurisdictions in the same time zone. New hub, new staff, new processes: this company needed new tools to support their delivery.

Our customer asked Consilio’s Advisory team for help with finding answers to these challenges, creating digitally enabled, superior legal service across its global operations. The primary focus was to improve efficiency and effectiveness in legal processes without compromising quality.

The solution

As an in-house legal operations pioneer, our customer felt excited to explore using generative AI solutions to solve their challenges.

Our knowledgeable AI experts reviewed various generative AI solutions to assess their fit against our customer’s goals. The review had to cut through the market hype around generative AI to find a long-term solution that could meet multiple challenges with the potential to enhance the delivery of legal services well beyond its current levels.

After the discovery phase, we proposed trialling CoCounsel, a generative AI tool specifically designed for legal by Casetext and acquired by Thomson Reuters in 2023. When implemented correctly, this tool helps in-house counsel drive efficiency by automating contract review, summarising documents, extracting critical data, drafting correspondence, identifying noncompliant contractual clauses, and more.

To ensure the best fit for our customer, our experts designed a strategy to pilot the solution with a select group of users in a proof of concept test to demonstrate CoCounsel’s potential.

The results

During the proof of concept, CoCounsel delivered remarkable results:

  • Contract review efficiency: CoCounsel reduced the time to review contracts. In one example, the review of five complex multinational contracts was reduced by 99%, down from one day per contract to just 30 minutes for all five. That’s a total productivity savings of 39.5 for this exercise.
  • Multilingual capabilities: Legal professionals were able to review contracts in different languages while applying company policies. For example, an English speaker could review Spanish, Portuguese, and French contracts without needing to engage specialist translator resources or native speakers.
  • Other skills: The users expanded the utility of CoCounsel beyond contract summarisation and review, also evaluating critical dates and obligations in the contracts.

Following the successful pilot, our customer decided to implement CoCounsel globally. The full implementation involved over 150 users, which is one of the largest global implementations of CoCounsel to date. Given the size of the rollout, our team crafted a comprehensive change management strategy and training programme, because prompting expertise is a necessity to deliver the best value from using a generative AI solution. Our consultants delivered prompt engineering training and active, available support to help fine-tune users’ experience with CoCounsel.

We completed the project with significant positive outcomes:

  • Rapid ROI: Our customer realised a positive return on its investment in just 8 weeks from the go-live date.
  • Enhanced efficiency: Even at an early stage in the project, more than 76% of users expressed confidence that CoCounsel was improving their performance, and 78% agreed that it was having a very positive impact on legal service delivery.
